Description
Bob Piazza of Florida found 2002D-1DER-003T, on which thin trail lines leave the letters of the motto and run to 300°, west-northwest, up and to the left. In the number, the 1 after 2002D means one cent and DER means the extension is on the reverse; 003 is the file and T the trail type. At the middle die state described, the obverse carries a series of small gouges east of LIBERTY and below it, and the reverse has striations of die damage from the rim through the ST of STATES. Those striations are separate from the thin trails on the motto and help confirm the die. The explanation favored by most is polishing of the die with a rotary tool; some favor the die moving against the hub.
