2002 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

On this 2002 Denver reverse, 2002D-1DER-002WS, fluting from column 3 extends lightly into the stylobate, while the steps under columns 5 through 8 bend moderately, all running at 190°, just west of south. The code reads 2002D, 1, DER, 002, WS: the date and Denver mint, the cent, the reverse design-extension category, the file, and wavy steps, TrailDies' label for trails that pass over the Memorial's stairs and warp their look. The coin TrailDies describes is late on both sides. The obverse has nothing noted; the reverse has die dots around the U of UNITED and more to the left, one of them under the S of PLURIBUS. Polishing the die with a rotary buff is the accepted cause of trails, though a minority propose that the die moved against the hub.
