2002 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails hang below the letters of LIBERTY on 2002D-1DEO-001T and run to 180°, straight down. TrailDies built the number from the 2002 date, the D for Denver, a 1 for the cent, DEO to show the extension is on the obverse, the file 001 and a T for trails. The coin described is at a middle die state, and a small gouge between the date and the D mint mark gives a quick check on the obverse; the reverse shows nothing noted. Louis Schaeffer found the die. TrailDies uses compass bearings for the direction, so 180° here means the lines point at the bottom of the coin. Trails are usually explained as the result of rotary polishing of the die, though some argue for movement of the die against the hub.
