Description

A dual-direction trail die variety, this Philadelphia Mint North Carolina State Quarter shows two distinct sets of trail lines: one set on the tops of the letters of UNUM at an offset direction of 300 degrees, and another from the word FIRST. Found by Michael Pope. Trail dies result from partial unintended contact between die faces during press operation. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with no noted markers; reverse at MDS with a die gouge over the left side wing and die damage below the A in CAROLINA. The dual-direction trail lines indicate two separate instances of die contact at different angular orientations. Struck in copper-nickel clad at 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm, the 2001-P North Carolina quarter was part of the 50 State Quarters program commemorating the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk.

Die Markers

  • Stage "B", obverse is MDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is MDS – a die gouge is seen over the left side wing. Die damage is seen below the A in CAROLINA.
