Description
On the 2001-P North Carolina State Quarter, SKH-25c-2001P-01(NC) documents a die gouge near Washington's portrait on a coin whose reverse celebrates the Wright Brothers' first powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. North Carolina was the twelfth state honored in the 50 State Quarters Program, released in 2001 during peak popularity when tens of millions of Americans actively collected each new design from pocket change. Spiked heads on State Quarters always appear on the common obverse bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait, since this side was produced from a standardized hub shared across all fifty designs. The raised projection near Washington's bust results from die surface damage — a gouge or chip that transfers metal during striking, producing a distinctive feature visible under magnification. Philadelphia Mint, copper-nickel clad composition. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
