PC-100c-2000P-01R Pre-Cud

Description

Representing a die caught at a fleeting stage of deterioration, the PC-100c-2000P-01R documents a pre-cud on the reverse of a 2000 Philadelphia Sacagawea Dollar — the inaugural year of Glenna Goodacre's design honoring the Shoshone woman who guided Lewis and Clark. A pre-cud is an internal die crack that has not yet broken through to form a full retained cud; metal fatigue has created subsurface fractures that would eventually cause a piece of the die to separate entirely if production continued. Pre-cuds are considerably rarer than full cuds because the die must be caught and removed at precisely the right stage of failure — after internal cracking begins but before the surface breaks away. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with the PC-100c prefix (pre-cud on a 100-cent denomination) and the R suffix indicating the reverse. Struck on manganese brass-clad planchets at 26.5mm. Examine the reverse for subtle raised indicators of subsurface die failure.
