Description

Marking the fortieth anniversary of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design, the 1999 Lincoln Cent holds a special place in the series timeline. Introduced in 1959 to replace Victor David Brenner's Wheat Ears reverse, the Memorial design had by 1999 become the longest-running active reverse in American coinage history. WDDR-010 from the 1999 Philadelphia production records a hub displacement event on this iconic reverse during its anniversary year. The Memorial's twelve Doric columns, modeled after the actual Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., serve as the most sensitive barometers of hub misalignment: their thin vertical lines translate even minor shifts between hub impressions into visible secondary images that appear as ghost columns or thickened edges under magnification. As the tenth cataloged DDR for 1999, WDDR-010 sits in the early portion of a census that would ultimately grow to at least two hundred varieties. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1999 1¢ WDDR-010.
