Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999 1¢ WDDR-007, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling on the right side of the sixth column to the left of the upper statue within the Lincoln Memorial design. The Wexler notes indicate this is a replacement listing — the original WDDR-007 was a "wavy steps" variety, a class of anomalies no longer believed to represent true doubled dies, prompting the substitution of this column-doubling variety into the vacated catalog position. This catalog management practice maintains numerical continuity within the Wexler system while reflecting evolving understanding of which die anomalies qualify as genuine hub doubling versus other mechanisms. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running north-northeast from the top right of the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse features a die clash mark at the top of the seventh Memorial bay, a die gouge to the right of the C in AMERICA, a die gouge to the right of the lower second A in AMERICA, and a die gouge to the right of the upper T in CENT. The die clash mark at the seventh bay indicates this reverse die experienced a clash event during its service life in addition to the hub doubling that defines the variety, documenting multiple die anomaly types on a single working die. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1999 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse design, with its twelve columns and seated Lincoln statue, provides the architectural framework within which this column-specific doubling is identified and attributed.
