1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista with the distinctive description of a medium spread but light hubbing appearing as a double extra column number 7 — specifically from knee to pedestal and shin to ankle within the Lincoln Memorial design — DDR-017 documents an unusual doubling pattern on the 1999 Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse. The die classification codes UVC-3235 and DMR-019 anchor this variety in the VarietyVista system, and four die stages have been documented, providing exceptional detail about this die's working life. Stage A captures the reverse in early die state with the obverse at early-to-mid die state. Stage B records a die chip developing in upper bay number 1 while the obverse has progressed to mid-die-state — the chip serving as an additional diagnostic marker. Stages C and D at mid and late die states remain unconfirmed. The reverse die variety designation RDV-007 further specifies this particular reverse die within the broader population of 1999-P cent dies. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and in continuous service since 1959, features the detailed architectural elements of the Lincoln Memorial including its columns, steps, and the seated Lincoln statue visible through the central doorway. Doubling manifesting as an extra column demonstrates how hub misalignment during die preparation can create the illusion of additional architectural elements — a phenomenon unique to the Memorial reverse's intricate columnar design. The 1999-P cent was among the last decade of Memorial Cents before the 2009 bicentennial redesign, and seventeen documented DDRs reflects deep research into this mature series.
