1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016
Error
Description
Exhibiting medium spread west that produces an extra column number 7 from hand to pedestal on the Lincoln Memorial reverse, the 1999 DDR-016 is cataloged by VarietyVista with a particularly distinctive diagnostic: the doubling creates what appears to be an additional architectural column on the Memorial facade. Assigned UVC-3235 and DMR-019, this variety is tracked through four die stages — an unusually detailed progression: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die chip at the left eave and a die crack from the right cornice through the I of AMERICA to the rim at early-to-mid die state with the obverse also at EMDS, Stage C at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage D at late die state (unconfirmed). The four-stage tracking suggests this die pair enjoyed an extended production life with progressively developing die deterioration markers. The RDV-007 reverse die variety designation, noted in the comments, provides an additional attribution layer identifying the specific reverse die type. An extra column created by westward hub doubling is among the most visually striking diagnostics available on Memorial Cent doubled die reverses, as it adds a structural element to the familiar twelve-column facade that catches the eye of even casual observers. The 1999 cent was produced during the 40th and penultimate decade of the Memorial reverse design, and DDR-016 documents one of the more dramatic hubbing errors from this late period. Frank Gasparro's architectural reverse, with its precisely defined columns and geometric base, amplifies the visual impact of directional doubling in ways that simpler designs cannot match.
