1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Eighth in the 1999 Lincoln Memorial cent DDR census, DDR-008 exhibits light westward spread producing an extra column number 7 visible from the shin to the pedestal of the seated Lincoln figure within Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. VarietyVista documented this die under UVC-2973 and DMR-010, tracking three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces show early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with fresh die surfaces have been verified. The RDV-007 reverse design variant connects DDR-008 to the phantom column family that characterizes the 1999 Lincoln Memorial cent DDR landscape. The shin-to-pedestal range documents the lowest portion of the extra column, covering the area from the figure's lower leg down to the memorial floor — a segment that sits below DDR-007's elbow-to-knee range and DDR-003's knee-to-foot zone. Light spread classification distinguishes DDR-008 from the medium-spread varieties that dominate the 1999 DDR census, indicating a smaller magnitude of hub displacement that produces a less prominent phantom column requiring more careful examination to detect. Philadelphia's 1999 production of approximately 5.24 billion cents consumed hundreds of reverse dies, and the sequential DDR numbering through at least DDR-012 demonstrates how thoroughly VarietyVista has documented the hub doubling events across this production year. The lower portion of the memorial interior where this DDR manifests — near the base of the seated figure and the pedestal — presents relatively smooth design surfaces where even light doubling can be detected against the clean field background between the memorial columns.
