1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Third in the reverse doubled die lineup for the 1999 Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-003 presents medium westward spread creating an extra column number 7 visible from the knee to the foot of the seated Lincoln figure inside Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2961 and DMR-005, with three documented die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The RDV-007 reverse design variant connects this die to the same hub lineage as the other 1999 phantom column DDRs. Philadelphia's 1999 cent production of approximately 5.24 billion coins generated the enormous die consumption that made multiple independent hub doubling events statistically inevitable. The knee-to-foot range of the extra column on DDR-003 represents the lower portion of the phantom seventh column, complementing DDR-004's face-to-knee upper section and DDR-007's elbow-to-knee middle zone — collectively these varieties document overlapping but distinct vertical segments of what would be a full-length ghost column if all sections appeared on a single die. Each DDR number represents an independent working die that received its own unique hub doubling event, and the consistent westward displacement direction across the family suggests a systematic bias in the hubbing press setup during this period. Medium spread at the knee-to-foot level places the doubling in the lower third of the memorial interior, where the step geometry and the seated figure's lower extremities provide reference lines for detecting the displaced secondary column impression. Stage A's EDS confirmation means specimens exist with fresh die surfaces preserving the doubling at maximum clarity.
