1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Medium hub doubling rotated counterclockwise at approximately 45 degrees — producing an extra set of knees and a partial seventh column appearing like a hand — makes this the premier doubled die reverse for the 1999 Lincoln Memorial Cent, cataloged by VarietyVista. The dramatic 45-degree CCW rotation during the hubbing process created one of the more visually distinctive doubled dies in the Memorial Cent series, as the rotational character produced effects quite different from simple directional spread. The Lincoln Memorial's seated statue and columned facade, visible through the central entrance on Frank Gasparro's reverse design, provided design elements where rotational doubling created recognizable anatomical-looking anomalies — hence the "extra set of knees" description. Die stage tracking reveals considerable progression: UVC-2842, DMR-003, with Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing die chips at the left eave, on columns 2 and 11, and a die break on the roof above bay 6 (obverse at early-to-mid die state), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The notation "RDV-007" identifies the reverse die variety number. The 1999 Lincoln Cent was the final year before the millennium changeover, and Philadelphia's massive production of over 5.2 billion cents that year consumed hundreds of die pairs. As DDR-001, this stands as the most significant reverse doubled die for the date.
