Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-1c-1999-04, this 1999 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits an atypical die clash — a clash event where the misalignment between the obverse and reverse dies goes beyond the normal centered position, producing transfer marks in locations not seen in typical clashes. Unlike a typical die clash where the dies meet in approximately their normal striking alignment, an atypical clash involves lateral offset or angular misalignment that causes different portions of each die's design to transfer onto the opposing die. This specimen shows strong clash marks combined with the diagnostic misalignment, and the catalog notes that the O from ONE (on the reverse) can be seen clashed just behind Lincoln's head on the obverse — a transfer that could only occur if the reverse die was significantly displaced from its normal centered position during the clash event. The coin resides in the collection of Joe Koelling, whose holdings have provided study material for numerous MadDieClashes entries. Philadelphia struck approximately 5.24 billion cents in 1999, an enormous production volume where high-speed coining presses occasionally experienced feeding failures that allowed the dies to contact each other without a planchet, and the mechanical vibrations or tolerances in the press alignment could produce the lateral offset characteristic of atypical clashes. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse features ONE CENT prominently in the lower field, and the O's transfer behind Lincoln's head creates a faint incuse impression that mirrors the letter's shape. Collectors should examine the area immediately behind Lincoln's head on the obverse under 10-15x magnification with angled lighting, looking for the faint outline of the reversed O from ONE — the mirror-image orientation and incuse nature of the clash mark distinguish it from any normal design element.
