Description
1998P-5DEO-001T is a 1998 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel obverse with light trails. TrailDies' code breaks into 1998P (date, mint), 5 (five cents), DEO (obverse design extension), 001 (file) and T (trails). The lines drop from TY in LIBERTY and from the small star that separates LIBERTY from the date, running due south at 180°. Tanaka Davis found the die. The late-state coin photographed shows a small gouge between WE and TRUST on the obverse and, on the reverse, another near the rim beside the left end of Monticello. The cause usually given for trails is polishing of the die face with a rotary buff; a smaller group attributes them to movement of the die against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage "C", obverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen between the words WE and TRUST.
- Reverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen between the rim and the left side of Monticello.
