Description

Completing a trio of spiked head varieties for the 1998 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this third entry was documented on May 18, 2017, by Cuds on Coins. Three spiked heads from a single Jefferson Nickel date indicates that at least three distinct obverse dies cracked into the bust during the year's production, each producing a spike with unique positional characteristics on Jefferson's portrait. The 1998-P nickel was produced during the final years before the dramatic Westward Journey redesign of 2004-2005, when Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse had been in continuous service for sixty years. Each new spiked head discovery for these late-series dates adds to the cumulative record of cracked obverse dies on one of America's longest-running coin designs. The third spiked head for 1998-P confirms that obverse dies cracked this way often enough to populate a small but meaningful catalog for this date. No cross-references to other classification systems exist for SKH-5c-1998P-03, and its distinction from the first two entries rests on the precise location, angle, and size of the spike relative to Jefferson's profile.
