Description

Representing the sole documented spiked head for the 1998 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel to date, SKH-5c-1998P-01 records a die crack from the final full year before the State Quarters program redirected significant public attention to quarter production beginning in 1999. On Jefferson Nickels the spiked head is a crack in the obverse die that runs from the rim into the bust and strikes up as a raised spike on the portrait. Philadelphia's 1998 nickel production continued the high-volume output characteristic of the decade, consuming numerous die pairs across extended press runs. A single documented spiked head may indicate either that fewer of the 1998-P obverse dies cracked this way than on neighboring dates or that fewer coins from this date have been systematically examined for varieties. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on November 22, 2016, this variety carries no known cross-references.
