1996 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-004T Trail Die Obverse

Description

1996D-1DEO-004T has light trails rising from the tops of LIBE in LIBERTY at 355°, almost due north. Its code covers the 1996 Denver cent (1996D, 1), TrailDies' obverse design extension group (DEO), file 004, and T for trails. The same coin has heavy lathe lines on its reverse, and TrailDies lists that side separately as 1996D-1c-LL-018T; those lathe lines serve as the reverse marker. On the obverse, at a middle die state, a gouge sits in the D mint mark. Richard Cooper (Coop) found it. A rotary polishing tool working the die is the standard explanation for trails; some prefer movement of the die against the hub.
