Description
SKH-1c-1996D-01 is a spiked head on the 1996-D Lincoln Memorial Cent. A spiked head is a die crack or break at the top of Lincoln's head: planchet metal fills the crack during striking and stands up from the portrait as a raised spike. The D mintmark on the obverse allows for immediate facility attribution, distinguishing this variety from the extensive Philadelphia sequence. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on March 20, 2024, this variety was documented nearly three decades after the coins were originally struck. Collectors pursuing complete date-and-mint spiked head sets regard the 1996-D as a particularly elusive target.
