1996 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

1996D-1DEO-002T is a dual-direction trail die. Lines rise from the tops of LIBERTY and of IN GOD WE TRUST at 000°, due north, while the bottom of the date carries lines pointing the opposite way, 180°, due south. The number gives the 1996 Denver cent (1996D, 1), an obverse design extension (DEO), file 002 and T for trails. The middle-die-state coin TrailDies describes has a gouge above and left of the 1 in the date, and vertical scratches through the O of ONE on the reverse. Jeremy Gardner found the die. Trails are generally attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary buff; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – a die gouge is seen above and to the left of the 1 digit in the date.
• Reverse is MDS – Vertical die scratches are seen through the O of ONE.
