1996D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Bill Slaughter, this Trail Dies-cataloged Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows trail lines on the mintmark and the bottom left corners of both 9 digits in the date at an offset direction of 260 degrees. Trail die effects result from partial offset contact between die faces during press operation, transferring faint design lines. Die markers at Stage C: obverse at LDS with no significant additional markers; reverse at LDS with metal flow lines above and through the FG designer initials, a small die gouge in the O of ONE, and a die break on the upper right corner of the N in ONE. The LDS designation indicates this trail die was documented on a die pair nearing end of service. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1996-D was produced at Denver during the middle era of the fifty-year Memorial reverse designed by Frank Gasparro.
