1992D-1DER-018T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Closing the eighteen-variety 1992-D trail die reverse census, 1992D-1DER-018T was found by Joe Koelling — one of only three discoverers in this census, alongside Bill Slaughter (thirteen varieties) and Bob Piazza (one variety), with Koelling contributing this final entry and Slaughter credited with the remaining three unaccounted varieties. The obverse die carries a cluster of diagnostic features at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS): three small die gouges in Lincoln's vest and an additional gouge above the first 9 digit in the date, creating four distinct positional markers on the portrait side alone. No notable reverse markers were documented. The vest-area gouges are spread across a relatively small zone of the portrait, and their triple occurrence in one area suggests either a localized manufacturing defect in the die surface or concentrated impact damage from debris in the press. Koelling's discovery of 018T brought the 1992-D census to its current total of eighteen trail die reverses — a count that makes 1992-D one of the most prolific dates for this variety type in the Lincoln Memorial cent series and a testament to the systematic searching that Slaughter, Piazza, and Koelling invested in Denver Mint cents of this year. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
