Description

At Stage D in a Very Late Die State (VLDS), 1992D-1DER-010T presents a diagnostic challenge that tests even experienced trail die searchers: distinguishing genuine trail lines from the flow lines and die fatigue artifacts that accumulate naturally on heavily worn dies. Very light trails appear on the upper right corner of the letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM at a 030-degree offset, but these subtle displacement features coexist with the flow lines, die polishing marks, and surface degradation inherent to a die that had been striking coins well past its normal service interval. The key to separating trails from flow lines lies in directionality and consistency — genuine trail lines maintain a uniform directional orientation matching the offset angle and appear on the high points of design elements, while flow lines tend to radiate outward from design elements in patterns dictated by metal flow during striking rather than by die displacement geometry. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas, the obverse shows numerous light die scratches around Lincoln's ear area, consistent with the advanced die deterioration expected at VLDS. The reverse carries a die gouge under the U of UNITED. The VLDS designation places this die at the terminal end of its production life, where every remaining strike risked catastrophic die failure. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
