Error
Description
1992D-1DER-009WST combines wavy steps with ordinary trails, hence WST; the rest is the 1992 Denver date, the cent's 1, the reverse-side code DER and file 009. The stairs bend strongly under columns 5 through 9, and fluting from columns 2, 3, 11 and 12 extends moderately to strongly into the stylobate, which TrailDies calls unusual under the right-hand columns. Trails also show on TED in UNITED, on the A in STATES and on the motto's E, faintly in ON and ENT. Everything runs at 190°, slightly west of south. The early-die-state coin has a gouge under the R of TRUST, a scratch linking UNITED's D with the motto's E, scratches in bay 6 and a small upright gouge in the cornice above column 6. Bob Piazza of Florida found and photographed it. Trails are generally attributed to rotary polishing of the die; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
