1992D-1DER-007WST Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Carrying the WST suffix — wavy steps, step deviation, and tilted trails all present on a single die — 1992D-1DER-007WST ranks among the most feature-rich trail die reverses in the 1992-D census, compounded further by dual-direction displacement at 020 degrees and 180 degrees. The die presents a complicated pattern: E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF, the right upper edge of the cornice, and the first A in AMERICA all show displacement at 020 degrees, while the designer's initials FG, CENT, and ONE exhibit trails oriented at 180 degrees. Column extension into the stylobate under columns ten, eleven, and twelve adds the wavy-steps component to the already complex trail pattern. The right-side column extension is notable — most WS-type trail dies show fluting under the left-side columns, making the presence of column extension under the three rightmost columns a distinguishing characteristic of this die. The coexistence of two offset directions with three distinct phenomena (fluting, step deviation, and trails) indicates that this die experienced multiple displacement events or a single complex event with rotational and translational components. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), with no notable die markers on either face. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
