Description

Two distinct displacement vectors operating on a single die make 1992D-1DER-005T a dual-direction trail die — a mechanically complex variety where the die received trail impressions from both 000 degrees (due north) and 270 degrees (due west). The westerly trail lines affect the left side of the die, while the northerly trails affect the top and right side, creating a compound displacement pattern where different regions of the reverse show trail effects oriented in perpendicular directions. Dual-direction trail dies form when the die experiences displacement events along two separate axes, either simultaneously during a single anomalous press cycle or sequentially across multiple events — the die record alone cannot distinguish between these formation scenarios, though the physical outcome is the same: a die surface carrying two superimposed sets of directional displacement. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas and documented at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), neither the obverse nor the reverse exhibited notable die markers, meaning attribution depends entirely on the characteristic dual-direction trail pattern. Among the eighteen 1992-D trail die reverses, dual-direction varieties like 005T are less common than single-direction types and represent a more complex interaction between the die and the press mechanics. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
