1992 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-003 Trail Die Reverse

Description

1992D-1DER-003 is printed by TrailDies without a type suffix, though the entry describes bent stairs, the effect it normally tags WS. The number gives the 1992 Denver date, the cent's 1, DER (design extension, reverse) and file 003. Fluting from column 2 carries lightly into the stylobate, while a light wave shows in the stairs below columns 5 through 8 where trails cross them, all at 180°, due south. The middle-die-state coin has nothing on the obverse; its reverse shows a gouge at the left of AMERICA's E and another under the left end of the base, over the O of ONE. Credit for the find goes to Bill Slaughter of Arkansas. The common explanation is that a rotary polishing tool worked over the die; a minority links trails to the die moving against the hub.
