1992D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Where 001WS exhibited a gradient of intensities across its phenomena, 1992D-1DER-002WS delivers strong expression on both fronts — strong fluting line extension into the stylobate under columns one, two, and three, paired with strong step deviation under columns five through eight, oriented at 180 degrees with emphasis on the left side. The uniformly high intensity across both fluting and step deviation makes this among the more visually dramatic WS-type trail dies in the 1992-D census, as collectors can observe the phenomena without the high magnification sometimes required for lighter examples. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas and documented at Stage B in a Mid Die State (MDS), the die's moderate wear level means the trail die features formed during a period when the die retained good definition — the features are inherent to the die's geometry rather than artifacts of advanced deterioration. A die gouge under the B and over the R of LIBERTY marks the obverse, while the reverse carries a die gouge in the loop of the R in AMERICA and another in the middle of bay four. The 180-degree due-south offset direction is the most commonly encountered orientation among trail die reverses. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
