1992D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Opening an eighteen-variety trail die reverse sequence for the 1992 Denver Lincoln Memorial cent — the largest single-date trail die census attributed to one discoverer — 1992D-1DER-001WS bears the WS suffix indicating both wavy steps (fluting line extension into the stylobate) and step deviation, the two structural phenomena that characterize this trail die subtype. The fluting lines extend strongly into the stylobate beneath columns one and two, with moderate extension under column three, while moderate step deviation appears under column five and light deviation under columns six and seven, all oriented at a 190-degree offset. Found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas, whose systematic searching of 1992-D cent rolls ultimately yielded thirteen of the eighteen trail die reverses cataloged for this date, the variety was documented at Stage C in a Late Die State (LDS). Obverse diagnostics include a die gouge on the inside and below the G of GOD, while the reverse shows two die gouges in the lower part of the loop of the O in ONE. These markers anchor the attribution for a variety that launched one of the most productive single-date trail die investigations in the Lincoln Memorial cent series. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
