Description

For 1991D-1DER-002WS, the stairs of the Memorial bend lightly beneath columns 6, 7 and 8, the effect TrailDies calls wavy steps (WS): trails that cut across the staircase and make its lines waver. The offset is 180°, due south. The rest of the number is 1991D for the Denver year, 1 for a one-cent coin, DER marking the reverse as the side affected, and 002 for the file. TrailDies describes a middle-die-state coin with nothing to report on the obverse; its reverse has gouges in bay 9 and a small die dot to the right of the P in PLURIBUS. TrailDies credits the find to Louis Schaffer. Rotary-buff polishing of the die is the explanation usually offered for trails, and die-to-hub movement is the one some prefer.
