1983 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

This Denver 1983 cent obverse appears in TrailDies as 1983D-1DEO-001T, which spells out the date with its D mint mark, the 1 of a cent, the DEO obverse code, file number 001 and a T for trails. Moderate lines come off the tops of the letters of LIBERTY, and the tops of IN GOD show some distortion as well. TrailDies gives the offset as 350°, a little west of due north. The coin is a mid-life strike (stage B); nothing is noted on the obverse, but the reverse has scratches along the left sides of columns 11 and 12 of the Memorial. Bill Slaughter of Arkansas found the die. The standard account blames die polishing with a rotary buff for trails like these; some attribute them instead to the die moving against the hub.
