1983 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDO-001 and cross-referenced to Crawford CDDO-001 and Coppercoins 1983D-1DO-005, this 1983-D Lincoln Memorial cent displays a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 10 o'clock, showing on the date and ERTY of LIBERTY. Class V doubled dies result from pivot hub doubling, where the hub rotates slightly around a fixed point during impression, producing doubling that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot — in this case, the lettering farthest from the 10 o'clock pivot shows the strongest secondary image. Obverse die diagnostics include die scratches on the date, on LIBERTY, and in the field near the eye and nose area, while the reverse carries a die gouge in the upper portion of the C in CENT. These die markers serve as fingerprints confirming specimens were struck from this specific die pair. The triple cross-referencing across the Wexler (WDDO-001), Crawford (CDDO-001), and Coppercoins (1983D-1DO-005) attribution systems creates a robust identification network that enables researchers to locate this variety through any of three independent catalog pathways. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc, this variety rewards careful examination of the date and LIBERTY regions. Attribution by Wexler Team.
