Description

Documented across three die states, the 1983-D Lincoln Memorial cent RPM-001 records a repunched mintmark where the D was applied to the die more than once in slightly different positions — a phenomenon possible only in the pre-1990 era when mintmarks were hand-punched into individual working dies. Die markers UVC-1133 and DMR-002 anchor the variety's identification. Stage A represents the early die state (EDS), currently unconfirmed, capturing the die before significant wear altered the repunching evidence. Stage B shows the obverse at mid-die state (MDS) while the reverse exhibits light die chips on memorial columns number 1, 2, 11, and 12 — deterioration markers consistent with late die state (LDS) that help attributors determine which stage a given specimen represents. Stage C records the late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed, where progressive die wear has further softened the repunching evidence.
