1979-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003
Error
Description
Displaying a D/D Tilted orientation, the 1979-D 1¢ WRPM-003 was attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1979D-1MM-002. The tilted designation indicates that the secondary mintmark impression was rotated relative to the primary, producing a distinctive angled overlap rather than a simple directional displacement. Tilted repunched mintmarks represent a specific subcategory of RPM varieties where the punch was not merely shifted but also rotated between applications, creating a visual effect that experienced collectors can distinguish from standard directional repunchings. The variety is documented across two obverse and two reverse die states. Obverse Stage A presents die scratches running roughly N-to-S under LIBERTY, a die gouge under RT of LIBERTY, N-to-S die scratches through the left side of O in GOD, and a light die scratch running N-to-S in front of Lincoln's lips. Obverse Stage B shows evolved markers: NE-to-SW die scratches appear on Lincoln's nose, scratches run NE-to-SW through TR in TRUST, and a small die dot appears in front of Lincoln's hair — while the earlier LIBERTY and GOD scratches have either weakened or been replaced by new damage patterns. Reverse Stage A features a light die crack through the left side of column 12, approximately N-to-S die scratches through the left memorial base and under the base, a die scratch running ESE from the lower third of column 12, and a NW/SE die scratch inside the lower opening of E in UNITED. Reverse Stage B displays a short die scratch running NNE in the lower third memorial bay, a NE-to-SW scratch through memorial bay 9, a northward scratch through the memorial base under the first column, and die gouges left and right of the lower U in UNITED. The 1979-D cent was struck from 95% copper planchets with Denver's hand-punched mintmark. Attribution by the Wexler Team.
