Description

Cataloged as the sole documented repunched mintmark for the 1972-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-001 records a D/D North displacement in which the initial mintmark impression sits above the final, correctly positioned D. This northward shift was created when the die worker placed the mintmark punch slightly high on the first attempt and then corrected the position downward for the definitive strike. The early 1970s Kennedy Half Dollar series continued to rely on hand-punched mintmarks applied individually to each working die, perpetuating the conditions that made repunched mintmarks possible. Denver's 1972 half dollar production was part of the second year of fully clad coinage for the denomination, following the discontinuation of 40% silver after 1970. Half dollars from this period saw limited circulation as the public increasingly treated them as collectibles rather than spending money, a trend that had begun even during the silver years. The northward displacement documented in RPM-001 represents a classic example of the type of positional error that was endemic to the hand-punch era, and its status as the only cataloged RPM for the 1972-D date makes it the definitive repunch variety for collectors assembling date-and-mintmark sets of Kennedy Half Dollar die varieties.
