1972 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

1972-D WRPM-002 is a repunched mint mark on the 1972-D Kennedy half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a D/D Tilted (Rotated). The obverse is the Hidden Hair Strand type from the master die WMDO-001. A light crack crosses the top of the hair between the B and E of LIBERTY, and short N/S scratches lie in the field left of LIBERTY's R. The reverse has a large semi-flanged G and several die cracks. Several cracks start at the rim at 10:00: one runs south through UNITED's I to the star under it, and the other turns east through TED of UNITED. A crack arcs down from the branch's bottom right, crosses the tail feathers and ends at the arrow feathers' left side. Another arcs slightly upward from the tip of the wing's left side and crosses roughly 75% of the cloud tops. The S and T of STATES are joined by light NW/SE scratches. Michael Taw submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
