Description

First cataloged repunched mintmark on the 1972-D Kennedy Half Dollar, WRPM-001 shows a D/D North pattern where the secondary mintmark impression sits above the primary — evidence of the hand-punching process that was used to apply branch mint mintmarks to individual working dies throughout the twentieth century. The Wexler Team attributed this under ID 1972-D 50¢ WRPM-001, documenting the northward displacement of the repunch. Obverse die markers show no noted features, directing attribution focus to the mintmark itself. Denver struck 141,890,000 Kennedy Half Dollars in 1972, a production figure that had declined significantly from the denomination's peak output years in the mid-1960s when hoarding of silver halves and the transition to clad composition drove enormous mintages. Repunched mintmarks on Kennedy Half Dollars carry particular collector interest because the large coin diameter provides excellent surface area for examining the mintmark under magnification, and the D/D North displacement pattern creates a clear secondary outline above the primary D that is identifiable with moderate magnification on well-preserved specimens. The hand-punching of mintmarks into working dies continued at the Denver and San Francisco Mints until the transition to hub-applied mintmarks in 1990, meaning WRPM varieties exist primarily on pre-1990 coins. WRPM-001's designation as the first cataloged RPM for the 1972-D half dollar establishes it as the benchmark listing against which subsequent discoveries for this date are compared, and its northward displacement provides the directional diagnostic that distinguishes it from any later-cataloged RPM varieties showing different displacement vectors on the same date.
