1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-1973 and DMR-011, this 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter repunched mintmark features the S impression displaced to the north — recorded as S/S North. Three die stages are documented. Stage A, the early die state: a diagonal die gouge appears on the upper R of LIBERTY on the obverse, with the reverse also in early die state — both Stage A markers confirmed. Stage B: middle die state, unconfirmed. Stage C: late die state, unconfirmed. The Stage A obverse gouge on the upper R of LIBERTY is one of the more precisely located early-state markers among clad-era proof Washington Quarter RPMs in the VarietyVista catalog, enabling early-state attribution from a single obverse feature. The 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter was struck at San Francisco on the copper-nickel clad composition introduced in 1965. S-mint proof Washington Quarters from this era carry hand-punched mintmarks, producing the repunching events that resulted in this and other RPM varieties.
