Description

Identified by a spread toward the rim on UNITED, this Wexler-attributed 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter WDDR-001 directs its doubling outward from center. The reverse carries a distinctive die marker: a die scratch running southwest to northeast on the lower left wing of the heraldic eagle, positioned to the right of the top leaf in the olive branch. This scratch provides independent verification of the working die. No significant obverse die markers have been documented. John Flanagan's George Washington obverse pairs with the heraldic eagle reverse on this San Francisco Mint proof struck in copper-nickel clad composition. The 1970-S proof quarters were produced exclusively for proof sets, and the controlled striking environment means doubled die characteristics originate solely from the die-making process.
