Description

RPM-002 documents a S/S Southeast repunched mintmark on the 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter, catalogued UVC-1210 and DMR-005 across three die stages: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid die state), and Stage C (late die state). The 1970-S Washington Quarter was issued exclusively as a proof coin for collector sets at the San Francisco Mint; no business-strike 1970-S Washington Quarter was produced, making every 1970-S quarter a specially struck clad proof — 75% copper, 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core — under John Flanagan's design. Southeast-direction repunched mintmarks arise when the initial S punch is brought down too far southeast before being repositioned, leaving a displaced secondary impression below and to the right of the final S. The three-stage die-state documentation framework allows collectors to identify where in the die's working life a given example falls, with Stage A representing the cleanest fields and the secondary mintmark at its most visible before abrasion begins to reduce the displaced impression.
