Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-005 (UVC-1213, DMR-008), this 1970-S Proof Washington quarter presents an S/S Tilted repunching in which the secondary S is angularly offset from the primary mint mark. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is provisionally early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, unconfirmed. The 1970-S Proof quarter was produced at the San Francisco Mint for inclusion in annual Proof sets and was not released into general circulation. The tilted orientation of the secondary S on RPM-005 distinguishes it from the directional (North, South, East, West) repunchings also cataloged for this date, as the angular misalignment affects how the serifs and curves of the secondary impression relate to those of the primary. UVC-1213 and DMR-008 are the VarietyVista internal reference codes linking this die to the 1970-S Proof die inventory. Within the set of four tilted-S repunched mint mark varieties for 1970-S (RPM-004 through RPM-007), each is distinguished by its unique die marker profile in addition to the specific tilt angle and degree of offset of the secondary impression.
