1970 (S) Proof Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-004 (UVC-1212, DMR-007), this 1970-S Proof Washington quarter displays an S/S Tilted repunching in which the secondary S impression is rotated relative to the primary. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is provisionally early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, unconfirmed. Proof quarters of the 1970-S vintage were struck at the San Francisco Mint with specially polished dies and planchets, producing the mirrored fields and cameo-contrast devices characteristic of the era. Among the Proof Washington quarter RPM varieties cataloged for 1970-S, the tilted repunchings — in which the secondary impression is angularly offset rather than simply shifted north, south, east, or west — are distinguished by the rotational skew visible in the secondary S serif details. RPM-004 carries the UVC-1212 and DMR-007 VarietyVista codes, which place it in sequence among the documented 1970-S Proof die inventory. Collectors assembling a set of 1970-S Proof Washington quarter RPMs will find RPM-004 among the tilted-variety sub-group alongside RPM-005, RPM-006, and RPM-007.
