1970-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

This dual-variety proof Jefferson Nickel, attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 1970-S 5¢ Pr WRPM-001, carries both a repunched mintmark on the obverse and a doubled die reverse cataloged separately as WDDR-013. The reverse spread towards the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling decreasing from left to right. Small die gouges appear to the right of the top of the small window on the left side of Monticello. The repunched mintmark — the primary designation — reflects an era when mintmarks were individually hand-punched into working dies, and a second impression at a slightly different position left a visible secondary S. San Francisco began striking proof Jefferson Nickels in 1968, making the 1970-S an early issue under that arrangement. Dual-variety coins combining an RPM with a DDR are particularly desirable because they document two distinct manufacturing anomalies on a single die pair.
