1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

WDDO-001 on the 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel is a dual-class variety classified as both Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) and Class V (Pivoted Hub Doubling) simultaneously — two distinct doubling mechanisms active in the same hub impression event. Struck with polished dies at the San Francisco Mint. A nice spread toward the center shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, increasing from left to right across the motto. A slight counterclockwise spread shows on IN GOD, the bottom of the coat, and the designer's initials — elements that rotate counterclockwise from a pivot point located at approximately 1 o'clock on the obverse. Die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, a slanted die gouge appears between the bottom back of the coat and the queue; a short vertical die scratch is present on the back of the neck. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the upper left of the first U of PLURIBUS, with two additional die gouges above.
