1970-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Rated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety — one of the most desirable doubled die reverses in the Jefferson Nickel series — WDDR-004 on the 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel delivers a strong counterclockwise Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling spread from a pivot point at the 10 o'clock position. E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS all show strong CW spread from that pivot, with very slight spread on MONTICELLO itself. The reverse die carries four precise markers: a die gouge (dot) inside the upper P of PLURIBUS; a short vertical die gouge to the right of the upper I of PLURIBUS; a die gouge (dot) to the right of the lower S of PLURIBUS; and a short horizontal die gouge north of the upper right corner of the building. The 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel at the San Francisco Mint under Felix Schlag's design, specially produced for collector sets. Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling is a rotational doubling class where the die and hub rotate slightly relative to one another around a fixed pivot point during one of the hubbing impressions, producing a spread that fans outward from that anchor.
