Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-1789 and DMR-036, this 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel RPM-013 exhibits an S/S East repunched mintmark — a variety where the initial S punch landed slightly west of the intended position before a corrective second impression was applied in the proper location, leaving the remnant of the first S visible to the east (left, from the die's perspective) of the final placement. Three die stages are documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS); Stage B is mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed); and Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The proof production context is significant — this coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint on specially polished planchets using polished dies for inclusion in collector proof sets, where the mirror-like fields enhance the visibility of the repunched mintmark against the reflective surface. The 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel was produced in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Felix Schlag designed both the Jefferson portrait obverse and the Monticello reverse. The 1970-S proof set had a mintage of approximately 2.6 million sets. The eastward displacement pattern — one of the simpler directional RPM subtypes — produces a secondary S image that is entirely to one side of the primary, creating a clear doubling visible at the mintmark location without the added complexity of rotational or angular offset.
