Description

Displaying an S/S North repunching on the 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel, RPM-005 is cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-448, DMR-007) with the initial mint mark impression visible to the north of the final S position. Like all 1970-S Jefferson Nickels, this is a proof-only issue, as San Francisco produced no business strike nickels that year. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B advances to mid-die state on both sides, and Stage C is cataloged as late die state (unconfirmed). The northward direction of the repunching means the first S punch landed slightly higher than intended before the correcting second impression was applied in the final position. Repunched mint marks on proof coinage carry added interest because proof die preparation involved additional polishing and inspection steps that might have been expected to catch such errors. The 1970-S proof nickel falls at the end of the era when San Francisco proof sets were the only source for S-mint coins, and die varieties from this period are systematically tracked. Felix Schlag's original design was in its thirty-third year of continuous use on the Jefferson Nickel.
