1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-447 and DMR-006, the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 is an S/S Tilted repunched mintmark variety from the San Francisco proof series. A tilted repunching means the secondary S impression is rotated relative to the primary, creating an angular offset rather than a straight directional shift — visible under 5x–8x magnification at the serif and loop areas of the mintmark where separation is greatest. Proof Jefferson Nickels were struck multiple times on specially prepared mirrored planchets using polished dies; the enhanced surface quality makes mintmark details easier to resolve than on business strikes. RPM-004 progresses through three basic die stages. The 1970-S proof nickel has no business strike counterpart, and RPM-004 occupies an appealing niche within the proof variety population where mirror surfaces and a rotational repunching combine in a particularly attractive coin when found in problem-free gem proof condition.
