1970 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005 / DDR-004

Description

1970-D WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1970-D Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDR-004. Both cite Cherrypickers FS-802, which Wexler writes as FS-10-1970D-802. Wexler describes a Class I clockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the torch flame, the upper olive and upper oak leaves and branches, ONE DIME, UNUM and E PLU, and cross-references the die as CONECA 4-R-I. It records two stages. At Stage A the obverse has a light SSW/NNE scratch left of the 1 in the date, and the reverse has a light SSW scratch leaving the second U of PLURIBUS at its lower right and an SSW scratch leaving the N of UNUM at its lower left. At Stage B the obverse scratch is gone and a short vertical scratch appears near the rim below the designer's initials, while the reverse shows light, nearly vertical scratches between the top of the torch and the highest olive leaves. John A. Wexler submitted the coin. VarietyVista credits James Wiles with the report and notes that the variety turns up in Mint Sets. It describes a medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the flame, the outer leaves, the dots, UNUM, the E PLU of PLURIBUS, and ONE DIME. It records four stages. Under UVC-540 and DMR-007, Stage A has the reverse in an early die state and the mint mark right of center, also early. Under UVC-541 and DMR-008, Stage B shows a scratch running south from the first U of UNUM in a middle die state, and the obverse die has been changed to one in an early state with the mint mark far right of center. At Stage C the reverse is late and the obverse middle; at Stage D the reverse is in a very late die state and the obverse in a late one.
