Description

First documented on October 1, 2013, and cataloged by Cuds on Coins, CU-10c-1970D-01 represents the sole known cud on the 1970 Denver Roosevelt dime — a rim die break that produced a raised, featureless mass of metal where a fragment of the working die fractured and detached. No cross-references to other error catalogs exist for this variety. The 1970-D dime holds a particular place in collector consciousness because it was the first Denver-minted dime produced entirely in the copper-nickel clad composition introduced in 1965, following the brief 1965-1967 period when dimes bore no mintmarks regardless of facility. By 1970, the mintmark had returned to Denver dimes, appearing as a small D on the obverse near the base of the torch on early issues and later in other positions as punch placement varied between die pairs. Cuds on the dime denomination are less commonly reported than on cents or quarters, partly because the smaller planchet size means die breaks must be proportionally larger to be visually conspicuous, and partly because dime errors receive somewhat less systematic searching attention than the cent, which attracts the largest community of roll searchers. Denver's 1970 dime production reached approximately 754 million pieces, a substantial output that consumed numerous die pairs over the course of the year. The single cataloged cud for this date-mint suggests either low die failure rates or limited search coverage, and additional examples may await discovery in unsearched rolls and accumulations from the early 1970s.
